Meet Willow May Jennings
I’m only fifty-three years old, but I have been badly used and poorly maintained. I have worked since I was eight years old; sweeping out Roy Taylor’s Barber Shop, throwing newspapers, bagging groceries, washing dishes, digging holes, and working as a gopher. Now, I stack paragraphs on top of one another, which I claim to be work, but no one believes me.
So I’m here to prove the critics wrong. To show a profit, or at the least, break even was all I expected. Besides the blood, sweat, and of course, the tears were all a part of the process. Yes, I will admit it; I rode the emotional roller coaster as I created Catmando. However, I am not really doing all of this for the fame and fortune, especially since there probably will not be a lot of either, but I do it for the art. The high of creating, and despite the withdraws of editing is a part of the job description, but it is the feeling of accomplishment that gives me the greatest satisfaction I have ever known. To think, some fool out there will actually buy my tripe, only confirms the adage that everyone is a sucker for a good romance, a humorous dialogue, or just the emotional ride the story gives our hearts. I think it is a good story and I hope you do too. Now, I can hear some of you say,” What’s a girl doing digging holes?” I would reply to that as the baby girl of five older brothers, you either had to take the teasing, the taunts, or be left behind to play with dolls. So, I had to learn to climb trees better than my brothers and eat worms with relish, and with a name like Willow May, I had to be made of true grit, or else endure the hair pulling, shoulder punches, and being called baby girl. So digging holes ain’t nothing. Willow May I have always had poor eyesight. It was not until I reached 31 years before I was declared legally blind and lost the life I had known. I joke about the diseases that rob my eyesight by speculating that my folks were wearing Lee genes when I was conceived, you know, bad jeans? After a year of feeling sorry for my lost life, I went back to school and received a BA in English Lit. Imagine a blind gal having to a do lot of reading and writing with no real way of seeing. By the time I graduated, I was totally blind. Three years later, by the grace of God, I got a job with Coke, no not selling it on a street corner but answering phones from irate customers. I was living large, but was not satisfied with my life. So I quit a 47 thousand dollar a year job to write full time. Yeah, my folks still think I’m crazy. I had to follow my heart. Catmando is a culmination of over five years of hard work and no real social life, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Willow May October 2012 |
